"The novel. Story. Fiction. All have been called to question and reshaped by the work of contemporary fictionists. Variously called 'experimental,' 'innovative,' or just 'new,' these writers have tested, bent, or discarded all the traditions of plot, setting, character, and narration. Raymond Federman offers for their work the name 'Surfiction'--writing that does not imitate reality, but that exposes the fictionality of reality--writing that proceeds word by word to produce meaning, not to reproduce meaning.

SURFICTION is a collection of 19 essays gathered in an effort to determine, define, and analyze the present state of fiction and its future. Divided into four sections, SURFICTION first considers the failings of traditional fiction; the second section offers a general view of the surfiction being written in America, France, and Germany; the third deals with individual authors--Beckett, Burroughs, Hawkes, Sukenick, J. M. G. Le Clézio, Claude Simon, and others; the final section attempts to formulate new avenues for the future. The authors discussed here have been chosen because their work is recognized as having disrupted the tradition in which fiction has been functioning.

Contributors to this collection include both working surfictionists and critics. They are John Barth, Jean-Francois Bory, Maurice Cagnon, Italo Calvino, Jonathan Culler, Jacques Ehrmann, Jochen Gerz, Marcus Klein, Jerome Klinkowitz, Richard Kostelanetz, Neal Oxenhandler, Richard Pearce, Robert Pynsent, Jean Ricardou, Stephen Smith, Philippe Sollers, Ronald Sukenick."--The Swallow Press Inc.
